Caring for your new dog

This new little dog will change your life for the best. He or she will bring so much pleasure into an average day making you wonder how you lived with out them. Your dog will know that you love him/her based on the care you provide and will love you in return.

Bulldogs are very high maintenance and require daily care. Every day their wrinkles must be cleaned with an antibacterial wipe. If you miss a couple of days your beloved little wrinkle face will begin smelling like sour milk. That odor is coming from the bacteria growing between the folds of their skin. If you do not keep up on cleanliness they will develop skin infections which means a trip to the vet along with a prescribed antibiotic. This means money out of your pocket and discomfort for your pet.

The bulldog nose gets dry and needs vaseline applied every couple of days. After cleaning their wrinkles give them a quick swab of vaseline on their nose.

Bulldog toenails grow extremely fast. They must have their nails trimmed weekly. Allowing their nails to grow too long will cause their toes to grow crooked causing them pain. The easiest way to trim their nails is with a dremmel tool with a sanding band on the tip. The dremmel can be used to shorten the nail and shape the end so it is not sharp. It also allows you to see your progress as you get close to the quick (a vein in the nail) instead of just snipping and hitting the quick with traditional clippers.

Their tails must be cleaned every couple of days. By this I mean under their tails where skin meets skin. Clean it with a wet wipe and then dry and powder it to keep them from sweating. Some bulldogs have corkscrew tails that grow inward. This creates a great deal of skin to skin contact, sweat, and hair buildup between their tail and hind end. Cleaning this type of tail is not an easy task but it must be done. If you fail to do so they will develop sores and infections, which cause discomfort and will require a trip to the veterinarian. More money out of your pocket.

Your bulldog's ears must be cleaned to prevent yeast build-up and infection. This must be done weekly. There are many ear cleaning products on the market that will make this an easy task. Make sure you dry out their ear. Moisture can cause an infection. Your vet can show you how to properly clean your dog's ears.

After your daily or every other day cleaning of your bulldog put a drop or two of saline or eye drops in their eyes to get out any debris. Be sure to wipe away any liquid left around their eyes.

Eight steps to bathing

  1. Gather all the things you’ll need: shampoo/conditioner, Vaseline, cotton balls, ear cleaner and towels or chamois.
  2. Put cotton balls in your Bully’s ears and Vaseline under the tail to keep the water out.
  3. Wash your Bully and rinse out all the soap. Be sure not to get soap in their eyes or they will associate bathtime with pain and fight you the next time. After washing you can use a cream rinse to help keep their skin from drying out.
  4. After rinsing dry your dog thoroughly with a towel and then a blow dryer on a low heat setting. Keep the dryer moving, don't let one spot get too hot, and don't let it get too close to your dog's coat.
  5. Remove the cotton balls from your dog’s ears and pour in a little ear cleaner until some runs out. Massage the bottom of the ear to loosen the excess dirt.
  6. Take a soft paper towel, roll it into a cone shape and gently push it into the ear to absorb all the liquid. Tilt the head toward the ground so any excess cleaner runs out. Repeat this until the ear is clean and dry (2-3 times if needed).
  7. Wipe all the Vaseline from under the tail. It’s important to keep the tail clean and dry. It can be a source of discomfort for your bully if hair or dirt is allowed to accumulate under the tail.
  8. Finish with a nice brushing and rubdown to stimulate the dog’s natural oils and a spray of mink oil to make them shiny. Mink oil also helps keep their skin from getting dry.

Your dog should now be nice and clean and happy!

Grooming feet

Bulldogs sometimes get what are called interdigital cysts. These are cysts between their toes. Some breeders feel these are heriditary and some feel they are due to their skin rubbing together when they walk. Putting powder between their toes will help keep them dry and free from friction when walking. If your dog does develop a cyst, your veterinarian can give you something to help heal them quickly.
